A Comparison of Threshold Cointegration and Markov-Switching Vector Error Correction Models in Price Transmission Analysis AgEcon
Ihle, Rico; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
We compare two regime-dependent econometric models for price transmission analysis, namely the threshold vector error correction model and Markov-switching vector error correction model. We first provide a detailed characterization of each of the models which is followed by a comprehensive comparison. We find that the assumptions regarding the nature of their regime-switching mechanisms are fundamentally different so that each model is suitable for a certain type of nonlinear price transmission. Furthermore, we conduct a Monte Carlo experiment in order to study the performance of the estimation techniques of both models for simulated data. We find that both models are adequate for studying price transmission since their characteristics match the underlying...

A FONTOSABB HAZAI TERMÉKPÁLYÁK ÁRALKUINAK JELLEMZŐI AgEcon
Varga, Tibor; Tunyogine Nechay, Veronika; Kemeny, Gabor.

Analysis of economic issues relating to the dairy sector, with emphasis on price transmission AgEcon
Popovics, Peter Andras.
The dramatic decline in consumption after 1990 was an important problem during the analysis of the sector. Even today, consumption is still below the degree that was before the political change, and significantly lags behind the EU level. The importance of this topic is emphasized by the fact that surplus milk could be marketed through the increased domestic consumption; this would create a more stable and calculable situation for farmers. Therefore, I considered it important to reveal what factors and by what shares influence the consumption of milk and dairy products. The relationship, time series and cross-sectional analysis based on national and international databases demonstrate the relationship between the consumption of milk and dairy products and...

Asymetric Price Transmission in the Spanish Lamb Sector AgEcon
Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria.
This paper aims to investigate the non-linear adjustments of prices between farm and retail prices in the lamb sector in Spain. The methodology used is based on the multivariate approach to specify and estimate a three-regime Threshold Autoregressive Model. Results indicate that in the long-run price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted along the marketing chain. In the short-run, price adjustments between the farm and the retail levels are asymmetric and are representative of a demand-pull transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions.

ASYMMETRIC PRICE RELATIONSHIPS IN THE U.S. BROILER INDUSTRY AgEcon
Bernard, John C.; Willett, Lois Schertz.
This study presents a testing methodology to analyze potential price asymmetries among the farm, wholesale, and retail levels of the U.S. broiler industry. Lag length, direction of causality and power of the integrators in the industry have allowed the wholesale price to become the center, causal price in the market. Asymmetric price transmissions, however, are limited. While downward movements in the wholesale price are passed on more fully to growers than increases in the wholesale price, only consumers in the North Central region of the U.S. share a larger portion of wholesalers' price increases than price decreases.

CAP REFORM, WHEAT PRICE INSTABILITY AND PRODUCER WELFARE AgEcon
Thompson, Stanley R.; Gohout, Wolfgang.
We use a simple nonlinear commodity market model to illustrate the impact of recent reforms of the CAP on the variability of EU and world wheat prices. Second, within an expected utility framework we estimate the transfer and risk effects on producer welfare due to market liberalizing reforms. We found that wheat producers were over-compensated for the losses due to lower prices following the 1992 reforms. The transfer effect clearly dominated while the risk component was small. Further, we did not find producer incomes to be more unstable following to the 1992 CAP reforms.

Causalidade e transmissão entre os preços de mandioca, trigo, milho e seus derivados no Paraná AgEcon
Alves, Lucilio Rogerio Aparecido; Cardoso, Carlos Estevao Leite; Felipe, Fabio Isaias; Campion, Michele Tubero.
This study aims to analyze the relations of causality and price transmission of the cassava root, the cassava starch, the cassava flour, the wheat, the wheat flour and the corn, in the State of Parana. The used data goes from January 1995 to December 2005, with monthly regularity. It was applied the methodology of Granger causality to test the relations between the variables. The results showed long term relations between corn and cassava root prices, cassava starch and cassava flour prices, wheat and corn prices and wheat and wheat flour prices. It was emphasized the dependence of the cassava root prices in relation to corn, wheat, cassava starch and cassava flour prices and its little influence on these variables. It was also noted that cassava flour...

Concorrência e estratégias de precificação no sistema agroindustrial do leite AgEcon
Azevedo, Paulo Furquim de; Politi, Ricardo Batista.
This article aims to evaluate the degree of competition in the dairy industry, in the relevant markets of Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk and pasteurized milk, by means of price transmission and marketing margin behavior. The empirical analysis is based on the model formerly proposed by Houck (1977) and latter detailed by Carman and Sexton (2005).This model analyzes separately the effects of input price increases and reductions on consumer prices, allowing for estimations of price transmission and margin behavior. Cepea-USP and Fipe provide, respectively, weekly input prices and consumer prices, both for the period of December 1999 to December 2005. As a major result, the degree of competition in the UHT relevant market was found to be robustly different...

Consequences of BSE disease outbreaks in the Canadian beef industry AgEcon
Stephen Clark, J.; Cechura, Lukas.
This study examines farm to wholesale prices spreads to measure the impact of the BSE disease outbreak on the Canadian beef industry. The study uses structure break tests developed by Gregory and Hansen (1996) and Hansen (1992) examine possible breaks within co integrating relationships. The study finds evidence that the industry began realignment as a result of the UK BSE disease outbreak, and the Canadian BSE disease outbreak was simply the largest realignment of the process beginning with the UK disease outbreak. However, the only statistically significant break was the BSE disease outbreak itself in May 2003. Stability was not restored until the border was reopened in 2005. Specific results indicated that the processing sector exploited the border...

Cooperative vs. Non-Cooperative Spatial Competition for Milk in the Presence of Farm Marketing Cooperatives AgEcon
Graubner, Marten; Koller, Ines; Salhofer, Klaus; Balmann, Alfons.
Although important, the spatial dimension is often neglected in studies of market power and competition in agricultural markets. This paper investigates spatial competition for raw milk between dairies under the presence of marketing cooperatives. Since observed in reality, our model is based on uniform delivered pricing and overlapping market areas. We compare spatial cooperative price matching with non-cooperative Hotelling-Smithies conduct. Utilizing a vector error correction model we show that the observed low price transmission in Germany is in line with cooperative behaviour. This seems rational since it increases processors profits. The abolition of the quota system may increase price transmission.

Decomposing Changes in Agricultural Producer Prices AgEcon
Liefert, William M..
This paper develops a method for decomposing changes in agricultural producer prices. The method builds on a procedure used by the World Bank, with the key variables in the decomposition being trade prices, exchange rates, and agricultural trade policies. The main ways by which we expand on the World Bank decomposition procedure are by broadening the analysis of policy effects, and by adding the effect from incomplete transmission of changes in border prices and exchange rates to producer prices, and the effect on prices from interactions between variables as they change simultaneously. We demonstrate the decomposition method by using the Russian poultry market in the late 1990s, and find that the dominant factor in changing the producer price was the...

Estimation of impact of EU agricultural policies on the world market prices AgEcon
Chantreuil, Frederic; Tabeau, Andrzej A.; van Leeuwen, Myrna.
According to world market studies, the influence of policy measures on the world market price in one or in a limited number of countries is, in general, much less significant than the influence of multilateral policy changes. To investigate the impact of EU agricultural policies on world market prices, we attempt to model the transmission between EU policy and world prices directly via world market price equations, as part of the AGMEMOD model.

Global Market Shocks and Poverty in Vietnam: The Case of Rice AgEcon
Coxhead, Ian A.; Linh, Vu Hoang; Tam, Le Dong.
World food prices have experienced dramatic increases in recent years. These “shocks” affect food importers and exporters alike. Vietnam is a major exporter of rice, and rice is also a key item in domestic production, employment and consumption. Accordingly, rice price shocks from the world market have general equilibrium impacts and as such, their implications for household welfare are not known ex ante. In this paper we first present a simple framework for understanding the direct and indirect welfare effects of a global market shock of this kind. Second, we quantify the transmission of the price shock from global indicator prices to domestic markets. Third, we then we use an applied general equilibrium (AGE) model to simulate the effects of domestic...

Grid Pricing: An Empirical Investigation of Market Signal Clarity AgEcon
Fausti, Scott W.; Qasmi, Bashir A.; Li, Jing.
The ability of the grid marketing system for fed cattle to provide an efficient price transmission mechanism is investigated. Nerlove’s (1958) adaptive expectations approach is adopted to model the relationship between grid premiums (discounts) and the weekly relative supply of carcass quality attributes. Linear regression techniques are used to estimate Nerlove’s supply response function. Granger Causality tests are conducted to investigate the relationship between grid premiums (discounts) and the relative supply of carcass quality attributes. Regression estimates and the Granger Causality tests provide empirical support for the 2005 National Beef Quality Audit call for clearer market signals.
